Golda Meir (גּוֹלְדָּה מֵאִיר, born Golda Mabovitch, May 3, 1898, Kyiv - December 8, 1978, Jerusalem; between years 1969 and 1974 also known as Golda Meyerson) was a Prime Minister of Israel. Historically, she was the first and still the only woman in this office in Israel, at the same time the fifth person in this position and also the third woman in the world to hold the office of Prime Minister.
She was elected Prime Minister od Israel on March 17, 1969, and headed for five years. Under her rule, Israel waged a protracted wae of attrition and witnessed the rise of terrorist attacks. In September 1972, a group of terrorists murdered Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics, and Golda Meir subsequently ordered intelligence services to track down and kill all those involved in the massacre in retaliation. Meir resigned as prime minister in 1974, the year following the Yom Kippur War. She is sometimes called "The Iron Lady" and the Former Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion used to call Meir "the best man in the government". She died in 1978 of lymphoma.
