Rosh Hashanah
Rosh Hashanah
The day when humanity was born. New Year. This is Rosh Hashanah. A two-day holiday celebrated on the 1st and 2nd day of the month of Tishrei, which is usually in September or October in the Gregorian calendar. It celebrates the creation of Adam. Every year, Jews remember that G-d forgave Adam for all his sins and believe that they too will be forgiven. Rosh Hashanah is a significant holiday that begins ten days of repentance, followed by another holiday, Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement).
How we celebrate: One should spend this holiday in prayer and repentance. Thus, many more people attend the synagogue than usual. The tradition is to blow the shofar - a ram's horn. Blowing it is among the key obligations. It is meant to open the souls of sinners and turn them to the right path.
What we eat: For example, pomegranates that are just ripening, or peas, or anything that has a lot of seeds. Each seed represents hope, hope that there are as many good deeds in people as there are seeds on our plate. Fish are a symbol of fertility, and of course, we wish to be at the head and not at the tail during the meal. A favorite treat is apples dipped in honey. To make the coming year sweet. And when we drink wine, it's sweet and white. White is the color of purity.
What we wish: Most often you will hear or see the greeting "Shana Tova", meaning "Good Year".
