Hebrew keyboard (מקלדת עברית, mikledet ivrit)

Hebrew keyboard (מקלדת עברית, mikledet ivrit) is a special type of keyboard, which is the computer imput device. The main difference between classic and Hebrew keyboard are Hebrew letters, which can be either alone or together with Latin letters. Depending on the layout of keys, there are two types of Hebrew keyboards.

The most frequent keyboard layout is the Standard Hebrew layout. It has 101-key layout which is derived from Hebrew typewriters. On Windows computers, You may switch between the Hebrew layout and the default layout by pressing Alt+Shift. There is a specific case when you want to write niqqud. A standard way is to press Caps Lock and then one of the keys above alphabetical part of a keyboard (i.e. 1-0 and adjacent keys).

A less common type is the Hebrew QWERTY layout. It is based on a traditional QWERTY layout and follows its Latin keyboard layout. For example, when you press the letter L, you will write Lamed, when the letter G, you will write Gimmel, etc. This type of keyboard layout can be useful for people who are not native speakers and who learn Hebrew. It can not be bought as a physical layout but there is a possibility to switch this option in some operating systems (e.g. Mac OS).
