Are you a real Jew? Make a DNA test

Do you know who you are?

The history of mankind is a rich reservoir of wars, migrations, political changes, escapes, and returns. Anyone who claims today with their head held high that they are Czech, Slovak, or Hungarian is lying to themselves. Central Europe is a magical place. It has a rich history, and its inhabitants have been present at the majority of globally important events. All military campaigns, conquests, dissolutions, and building of new empires brought with them many mixed unions, children, and generally mixed family relationships. Where do you belong? Folk wisdom says: "You can't pee out your genes". You can read a lot of interesting things about yourself, about your family that you know, and also find family that you don't know at all or were never meant to know. Who is genetically close to you? Where do your deepest roots reach? Do you want to embark on a mysterious journey of discovery? Have a DNA test done and start searching.

How Jewish are you?

Few nations are as concerned with their origins as Jews. And no wonder, they have spent so many years on the road, and even today they are scattered all over the world. Is your name Kohen or Cohen? You may well be a descendant of ancient Jewish priests! A significant social class that still plays a big role in marriages, not just in orthodox communities. As you surely know, since biblical times, the Jewish nation has been divided into several tribes, which were located in many places around the world. Using DNA, you can find out where your ancestors come from. Where your true roots are. Where to look for your true Jewishness.

What is it about?

DNA is a nucleic acid that carries genetic information. By analyzing it, it is possible to determine where, and especially in whom, your genome occurs.

How does it work?

A simple test is enough. You can have a kit sent to you with precise instructions, take your DNA sample, send it back, and then just wait for the results. You can focus on several types of testing.

Which test to choose?

Paternal Ancestry Y-DNA focuses on genes in the paternal line. This chromosome is passed from fathers only to men. Not to women. Thus, the male line is tested. In this case, you can also choose the level of the test. Is it enough for you to know just where your similar genome is found in the last few hundred years? Or would you like to go further back in history? The comparison can even be made with ancient excavations.

Family Ancestry is an ideal way to start testing. Where does your family, your ancestors come from? Where is the highest occurrence of your common genes? You can trace the path of your ancestors and thus complete your family history, your family tree. And what's more, you can find family members you never knew existed. Have you ever thought deeper about the common question: "Who does this child take after?" Now you can find the answer.

Maternal Ancestry – using mtDNA, you can search for ancestors in the maternal line. A chromosome that is genetically passed on only by mothers. Today, genetics determines human migration based on mtDNA. The roots of studies go back to the first migration waves coming from Africa.

How to do it?
1. order the test online
2. within 3-4 weeks, you will receive a package containing a DNA testing kit for oral swab
3. after testing, send the results back to the sender
4. you will learn the results in approximately two months
5. basic knowledge of ENG is required

What next?
1. you will receive the results on FamilyTreeDNA, then you can upload them to MyHeritage
2. in addition to discovering your Jewish or non-Jewish origin, you can also search for other relatives P.S. #Cohen57 currently has about 7000 of them and that's already a big family! If you want to know more or order a DNA testing kit, visit the link below

Do you think you're a Jew? Or are you just a jew! Forget about Halacha!

In thirteen years of running #JEWISHOP, I've had the honor of meeting countless fascinating people. From Orthodox Jews to Christians and Muslims, to those who discovered their Jewish ancestry through a great-grandmother. I've met people who are halachically Jewish through their mother and those who simply felt a connection to Jewish culture.

Whether they were followers of Abrahamic religions or completely different faiths, they had one thing in common - pride in their origins and a desire to explore it. Most of them agreed that this origin, even if distant, is a key part of their identity.

These conversations and meetings always filled me with joy and confirmed how diverse and rich the Jewish community can be. Each story was unique, each path to Judaism personal. And it's this diversity that makes my work so interesting and fulfilling.

You know how it goes in business - some things just work according to certain rules. One of them, which has proven effective for me in practice, is the famous Pareto principle 80:20. When I apply it to my store, I find that 80% of customers make up 20% of turnover, while the remaining 20% of VIP clients bring in 80% of revenue. Logically, I give these "top players" extra care.

But that doesn't mean I neglect other customers - I like everyone who shops with me! I just don't let the larger group get away with everything. You know what I mean.

And speaking of Pareto, I thought of applying it to human nature as well. It's just my personal opinion, but I think 80% of us are shaped by genes and only 20% by upbringing, friends, and school. Of course, you don't have to agree with me, it's just my reflection. What do you think?

I'd like to share my personal view on Orthodox Judaism in Europe. From my experience, it seems that the strictest practitioners are often converts. People with Jewish roots who truly understand the depth and beauty of faith usually don't feel the need to cling to every detail.

I also think that immersion in a mikveh alone doesn't make a person without Jewish ancestry a "real" Jew. It's a more complex process that requires a deep understanding and acceptance of the Jewish way of thinking and living, which they can never achieve without the genes.

May 27, 2021 - With Aunt Dana Michailovici (my aunt from Israel, whom I know thanks to a DNA test), at Medvídků for a Shabbat lunch >>> dumplings, pork, cabbage.

By the way, her favorite food in Prague, she comes here twice a year, is either the aforementioned dumplings, pork, cabbage or Wenceslas sausage :))

February 20, 2020, 2:00 PM - Žižkov Television Tower - Tower Park Prague. Mickey Rony Sterlinger (my cousin from a DNA test from Israel) at the observation deck with his wife and mine.

Mickey eats kosher, he comes to Prague once a year, but he can never resist having non-kosher svíčková (roast beef in cream sauce) with dumplings.
