CZECH REPUBLIC - ISRAEL
Relations between the Czech Republic, or Czechoslovakia, and Israel have a long tradition. Even before the establishment of the independent state of Israel, Zionist tendencies were supported by both the first Czechoslovak president T.G. Masaryk and later by his son Jan Masaryk. This relationship lasted for many years. However, the situation after World War II was much more complicated. The political scene was changing, and supporters of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia quickly rose to power. Initially, they supported the tendencies for Israel's independence. After all, this was what the entire Soviet Union was doing. Its representatives believed that they would gain a strong ally in the Middle East. However, the opposite was true.
Historical paradoxes
Although the state of Israel was established in 1948, with substantial help from the already communist Czechoslovakia, which supplied it with many weapons from the previous war. Israel's independence was thus conquered, for example, by German bombers that had been captured from the Nazi army. Shortly after the establishment of Israel, however, it became clear that although the state's politics were left-leaning, it chose the USA and Great Britain as political partners. This was a shock to the Soviet Union, and friendly relations were immediately terminated, and a not-so-glorious alliance was established with Palestinian representatives. Czechoslovakia did not restore relations until after the Velvet Revolution in 1990.
How is it today?
You can find the names of Czech presidents T.G. Masaryk or Václav Havel in many places, with benches, parks, and streets named after them. Many Israelis have Czech roots and proudly claim them. Last but not least, Czech athletes are also admired. In 2010, the Czech Center was opened in Tel Aviv.
